The History of the Part of West Somerset Comprising the Parishes of Luccombe, Selworthy, Stoke Pero, Porlock, Culbone and Oare, Volume 1. In the Domesday Book it was recorded as Selewrda.
It was held by Queen Edith of Wessex in and, with Luccombe, was awarded to Ralph de Limesy by William the Conqueror. In Edward I awarded it to Henry de Pynkeny. It passed down through the family until acquired by marriage by Sir Thomas Dyke Acland in District: Somerset West and Taunton.
Lying near the attractive village of Selworthy, in the heart of the Exmoor National Park, historic Holnicote House stands within a series of peaceful gardens with spreading lawns. Once the centrepiece of an extens acre estate, the charming and characterful house was gifted to the National Trust in Memoirs of Selworthy and West Somerset.
